Sultry
Miami heats up when the sun fades into the ocean.
Often called the nightclub
capital of the world, this hedonistic metropolis
fuses the tropical
flavors of Latin jazz with Jamaican reggae, hip-hop,
rock, disco, Top
40, steamy blues, and Cuban salsa. A
dizzying array of cultures and subcultures come
together to party hearty from
dusk to dawn. Most of the night-time partying centers
around Miami Beach,
one of the premier places on the planet to see and
be seen. Here celebrities
mingle with hot fashion models as well as common folk.
Hollywood
has nothing on South Beach in the way of star power.
At the clubs you're
likely to see Elton John, Madonna, and Ricky Martin,
who has his own thriving
hotspot.
The
highest concentration of night-time action is along
Ocean Drive, Washington
Avenue, and the Lincoln Road
Mall. More nightlife
centers on Coconut
Grove and the fringes of downtown Miami. Bars and
cocktail lounges in
most large hotels operate nightly discos, with live
entertainment on weekends. As one might imagine, most nightclubs
here are
gay-friendly, especially
in South Beach.
The
local wait staff - many are models or actors - are
tuned into the latest
hotspots, which often change as quickly as the summer
weather. These folks are a good
barometer of where to go to get the atmosphere you
want.
The
rhythms of Miami Beach's club scene rival that of
any international city.
Most of the night club action doesn't start until 11pm, so take an
afternoon
siesta before you start to party.
At
night traffic grinds to a halt and partiers spill
into the streets. Parking
can be a problem in areas where there are lots of
bars and clubs; you
will need plenty of quarters for metered parking.
It's easier to find a
parking garage and do your club crawling on foot.
Most nightlife neighborhoods
are safe and easy to navigate. While
Miami is known for its trendy and fashionable clubs,
it's not easy to find
a laugh here. At least not on a regular, sustained
basis. The only major
comedy club in the area is Improv Comedy Club and
Cafe, located at 3390 Mary
Street in Coconut Grove. At the Improv, you can
catch stand-up acts every
night of the week while enjoying a drink or dinner. To plan
your night time itinerary, check out the Miami
Herald's "Weekend" section
published on Fridays. You'll find that, in
Latin-influenced Miami, there
are parties, then after-parties, then after-hours-parties. Many
clubs
are still pulsating past 5am. By the time you leave
you'll be ready to
sip a thimble-size cup of high-octane Cuban espresso
to get jump-started
for more partying.
