This user-friendly gallery in downtown Miami has emphasized art from the Western Hemisphere since World War II. Formerly the Center for the Fine Arts, a space solely for traveling exhibitions, the Miami Art Museum was established 0n 1985, 10 years after the Center's founding.

Realizing that Miami had matured into a vibrant international city, the museum's trustees decided in 1994 that a central museum with a permanent collection was needed to make it a truly great city. A community-wide long-range planning process was launched, with 200 citizens joining in to formulate a vision for the future. In 1996 the Center was re-named The Miami Art Museum of Dade County.

Housed in the Miami-Dade Cultural Center, the museum still features a wide range of changing exhibitions fromMiami Art Museum around the world, as it works to build a permanent collection. The comfortable, large and airy gallery with exhibits on two floors is one of Miami-Dade County's largest museums.

Since 1996 the museum has had several exhibits called New Acquisitions Dream Collection, which were intended to telegraph the museum's new mission to develop a permanent collection. The works, by artists such as Pablo Picasso, Joan Miro, and Willem de Kooning, show the caliber of artwork the museum is looking for in its permanent collection. Currently, the growing collection includes works by Robert Rauchenberg, Helen Frankenthaler, and Leonora Carrington.

Miami Art Museum The Miami Art Museum shares the Cultural Center with the Historical Museum of Southern Florida and the Miami-Dade Public Library. Parking at the six-floor Cultural Center Garage is $2.40 when your parking ticket is stamped at the museum's admission desk.
